I grew up in chgo.,and I would visit my grandmother in San Antonio,Tx. in the summers. There was a pecan tree in her back yard. So I grew up with my grandmother making me pecan candy. I now live in L.A., but on my visit to Chgo. for Christmas 2002, a friend introduced me to the cd...Pecan Tree. I knew it was going to be special to me. BUT, little did I know how special. I have always enjoyed Joe Sample, and piano is my favorite music. Add to that...Lizz Wright. Now this is Perfection. I must have died in the past few months, because I am truely in Heaven now.

I just found your website so I'm in heaven! Unfortunately I have only heard the title track on the local smooth jazz radio station but since I've been following Joe since his days with the Crusaders, it doesn't really matter. I have been fortunate to see him in concert and his style is unique. I will definitely put this one on my santa list. Way to go Joe! Mayo Mayo

I enjoyed the exchange also. In fact I like my new name. Think I'll keep it if you don't mind. Looking at your playing list I see we enjoy pretty much of the same type of music, however, I guess our paths part at a certain point. But hey! That is what makes music so wonderful there is something for everybody. Keep it real. Signed Koolcat :-)

Response to Come On Dude

You are very immature and have just showed your minuscule mind. If wasn't for the artist that you make light of there would be no music from Brian Culbertson or even Joe Sample. Those artist are the forefathers of jazz. I don't particularly care for Jelly Roll Morton (you do know who he is don't you?) but I have the sense to recognize his talent, skill and the great contribution he has made to the development of jazz. I suggest you take a little time to read about your favorite jazz artist to see who inspired them and you will probably be unpleasantly surprised.

Response to Don;t Get Me Wrong

9/17/02 7:16 AM (GMT-08:00), by Jazz1103

Is it your time of the month or has someone really been banging your buttons hard. Your list is somewhat impressive, however, I have a collection that would have you like a child in a candy store. What you need to realize is a true jazz musician does not cater to the masses but targets a specific audience. If you crave constant musical change I suggest you listen to pop, rock, or rap. Brian Culberson is okay if you like tinkle bell type music. If you don't like Joe Sample's style that's your prerogative, however, you obviously don't know the concept of a "signature sound." The Duke Ellington had it, George Duke has it, the Count had it, Cannonball Adderley had it, David Sanborn has it, Boney James has it and since you mentioned one of the Grusin brothers even Dave Grusin has it so if it isn't broke don't try to fix it. Peace

Joe has a beautiful sound and could hang with the best of them he just needs someone to write some music for him.and who gives a fuck how old or what color Brian Culbertson's skin is the mother fuckin music is sweet. know here is my artist to listen to for the week list 1.brian culbertson 2.dan siegel 3.don grusin 4.pieces of a dream 5.four play 6.ben tankard 7.bob baldwin 8.jeff lorber 9.eric montgomery 10.fred smith 11.kevin toney 12.joe mcbride 13.phil davis 14.tom grant 15 roger smith 16.urban knights 17.philippe saisse and now you people have little game and i'm not even going to charge you this time

trapped in time....

9/17/02 12:10 AM (GMT-08:00), by Hashy

without a brain :) ........ Seriously if you think Joe is simply old time shit then you're definately missin sumthin here....Bob James is a fine musician who has been around forever (like Joe) and frankly he doesn't do it for me. Culbertson is too young to even be compared to these guys - and frankly his music is not original or soulful enough to be compared to Joe... Joe is the orginal smooth master: always soulful, always musical...... an unfortunately very rare combination

I don't know which Joe Sample CDs you are listening to but I have followed Joe Sample from his Jazz Crusader days. I assure you that it is not as you say "old style shit." You suggested Joe contact Bob James and Brian Culberson to see what's up. If you knew your music you would know that Bob James called upon and was honoered to have Joe Sample provide piano accompaniment on his 2001 release "Dancing On the Water." As for Brian Culberson, he is good but he has not been on the jazz circuit long enough to even receive a rating must less provide advice to an accomplished and repected musician of Joe Sample's caliber of what's going on with jazz music. It seems that you are musically illiterate because if you knew your stuff you would know that Joe is very versitile and has been called upon to play, accompany, and even produce for greats such as Quincy Jones, Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, Grover Washington, Al Jarreau, Miles Davis, Marcus Miller etc

Joe is Wonderful as Ever

9/16/02 8:56 AM (GMT-08:00), by Jazz1103

Joe's music gets better all the time. I had the great pleasure of seeing him perform at the Birchmere Club in Alexandria, Virginia on 9/15/02. He played several selections from "The Pecan Tree" and got several standing ovations. Although his CD "Invitation" is my absolute favorite "The Pecan Tree" is a must have. If you have the imagination and are so inclined while listening to "X Marks the Spot" you can actually visualize the Louisiana French Quarter. Joe Sample and Howard Hewett's rendition of "With These Hands" is absolutely amazing. If you are in the mood for good music just put "The Pecan Tree" or that matter, any Joe Sample CD, on your CD player and float away to music heaven.

Joe I love you but you need to stop playing that old style shit you need to call up bob james or brian culbertson and see what's up.

This masterful sound, Joe has always come across with funky-melodic-smooth-grooving cuts. I have listened to his music for years, and I have tryed to incorporate a bit his sound, in my style. I enjoyed all of the cuts and look forward to seeing him play live soon.

everything Joe does is so musical - this new vocalist Lizz Wright is a find - love to hear more from her. Joe you have a fan here- your writing and playing are always tasty

Just Purchased Joe's Latest...I Was Teary Too!

7/19/02 6:02 PM (GMT-08:00), by PianoJewel

I played Joe's "Pecan Tree" softly in the background at my desk. I love Joe Sample piano alone, but when I heard the old classic "With These Hands" and Joe's mellow tunes and Howard's voice tenderly singing, I had to fight the tears back...it was SO beautiful and SO Joe Sample!! I enjoyed the cultural and musical background that Joe opened up and shared in relation to the old pecan tree and his childhood memories. Joe--"with your hands"--you've done it again. Thank you so much!

Can't Wait!

6/7/02 11:31 PM (GMT-08:00), by BigJoeFan

I am beyond overjoyed for the new release from Joe Sample. I was just at a recent concert where I was privileged not only to hear some pieces from his new release but, to get the background for the ones he played. But being a Joe Fan, that wasn't enough so I came to this site to see if I can hear more and I was surprised to see that Howard Hewitt was on this CD and wondered what he would be singing. I listened to a few tracks until a a particular title of a track caught my eye, "With These Hands." I thought to myself "Could this be a rendition of my FAVORITE, most touching song by Les McCan?!" When I played it and heard Howard Hewitt, I cried! What better person to have sing such a song! I can't wait til June 11! This CD sounds great and I heard alot of tracks that will hit #1. Thanks Again Joe!
